Question Must see places?

I've only briefly driven through Alabama while driving truck with my husband so it goes without saying we could only "visit" the truckstop.

If I had the chance to go back, what places/city/area is a must see for a tourist?

If I decide that I need souveniers, what will I be paying in sales tax?

When we lived in Baton Rouge, we took many trips trying to find a nice ocean beach. I was really naive and didn't realize there were no swimming beaches on the coast of Louisiana. Gulfport, MS, was the closest beach that people used to swim at, but because of the hurricane debris, we had to find another.

I stumbled upon some info about Dauphin Island...it seemed like the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beach atmosphere. On the way back from Pensacola Beach, we decided to drive out to Dauphin Island just to see what it was like. I was impressed and it was everything that I had hoped for. Nature lovers, hikers, fishermen and outdoorsy people would really enjoy this place. Fort Gaines is also located on the island and would be interesting to see, also. It's really not a commercialized area at all...in fact, if you're looking for a beach party spot...well...move on.

To answer your question, CleozMom, the tax rate in Alabama is a bit high. There is only a 4% state tax, but local taxes can add another 7%.

Here is a link to Dauphin Island:
