Been watching those fires. La Canada Flintridge is a place I know very well. I hope they get it contained soon. Earth Quakes and wild fires all in the same week....My worst nightmare. Still I think people along the Gulf have it just as bad if not worse. Take away all the elements I still think it's not a bad place to live. Maybe one day in the near distant future.

For all its balmy weather, dramatic vistas and lifestyle alternatives; natural disasters in the Golden state are a constant threat to people.

Let's not forget having the worst air qualilty and almost the worst education system in the nation! Very few reasons to move to Ca. to me these days even if it is sunny 24/7....that's why there is fireseason. So there is Spring, Summer and Fireseason. And who said Ca. doesn't have seasons?

Another good reason not to live there....insuring your teens. Most of my friends insurance jumped $2500 by adding on their kids. Here in the burbs of Boston...it went up only $442 for a 2002 PT Cruiser for the whole year! People here don't realize all the advantages they have compared to other states especially Ca.

Talking of high insurance in California, every now and then I check real estate in certain parts of San Fernando Valley and Ventura County. I've come to terms with the knowledge that I will NEVER be able to afford Santa Barbara, unless something changes drastically in my life or finances Today I was blown away at the prices in La Cananda...it's always been pricey but still, 800,000 for a three bedroom????

I called a friend in Glendale who has lived in Glendale since she moved from Michigan in '83 to see how she was doing with the fires. There isn't any eminent threat in her part of Glendale, but she has already gathered all her important docs, got the car gassed up and the dog leashes hanging on a chair near the front door.

Not so much travelled. I lived in the San Fernando Valley, but I had reason to be there a lot and had friend through out the foot hills. Still, yes I have some stories

Not as heart breaking as Katrina as they have been left there by their owners who will be returning for them, but all the same sad.
