I have crossed the bridge many times- it appears the suspension portion has the fault.

I wonder how they go about repairing structural cracks and such. My guess is that there's some new steel and a whole lot of welding and riveting to be done. That, or perhaps the old All-American fixit.

Actually part of the Cantilever section of the bay bridge collapsed in the 1989 quake- sending several motorists and their cars into San Francisco bay. They died. This section of the bridge is less flexible then the Suspension portion (where the crack was found) The eastern section-the cantilever section is being replaced by a new suspension section- that will be very modern- sort of an architectural foil for the Art Deco Suspension section to the west, which was built during the depression. The two different sections of the bridge are sectioned by their emergence into Yerba Buena Island.

They are in trouble. Seems that because there is no Tractor Supply locally, they'll have to have the Bailing Wire trucked in from another location.
