Default How's your gardens doing?

Even here in Wyoming and out short growing season, my garden is looking good. Cucumbers are starting to climb, tomatoes are budding out, peas are climbing. My jalapena plants are over a foot tall and they're budding out. Looks like it's going to be a good season.

We had a severe storm roll through last night. Penny sized hail and 70+mph winds. Thankfully my plants are all on the East side of the house and the winds come in from the West. So the hail missed all my plants. Got a good drenching though. But no damage.

The hail can pound the crap out of my pickup, just don't mess with my mators.

Well, my mators are in big pots and I finally see the yellow flowers. I got started really late this year because we have been so busy getting the house fixed up. We did enjoy our asparagus! I also have these big green leafy things growing in the garden. Don't know what they are. The leaves are long and the stalks are green that's about all I can tell ya. I may take a picture of it and pop it on here when I get the chance. I need to get out to that asparagus and cut down the big stalks. (sortof been neglecting em)

Tomato plants are doing pretty good. I have 4 plants, 2 cherry tomato and 2 regular tomato. This is one of the regular tomato

When ripe, this is a Yellow Bell Pepper. It's about 4 inches across in the picture.

Jalapena plant. Look at all the buds! I've got 28 of these plants in.

Jalapena on the left and that Yellow Bell Pepper on the right.

Jalapena.

Even with the short growing season here, you can see I'm getting pretty good results. All of these plants are in Tubs. haha Not a garden in the ground. I did the tubs for 2 reasons. We're not supposed to cut in a vegi garden here. Plus, each week I move the tubs to a new location and then see how they do. More sun, less sun, etc. Trying to find the best place for growth.

Ate my first radish yesterday. My radishes, I planted about 25 of them. Waited 2 weeks and planted 25 more. Waited 2 weeks and planted 25 more.

I water every other day. Next year, I'm going to fill up those tubs to about an inch from the top. Although they're doing pretty good, I can see the roots (main) over against the side of the tub. I think they would do better if it was about 6 inches deeper.

What ever you see above ground there is that much root underground , corn will send down roots 6 an 8 feet if the ground is not to hard , an beans can go 5 feet , though they do grow some good stuff in hydroponics , you can do better in soil an drip line!

Like I mentioned, I've been moving them around to find the best growth area. Those peppers don't like director hot sunlight. Once I get that figured out, then this winter I'll have them set up and I'm going to get some PVC pipe and set up an automatic waterer. Going to put a timer on it so it will dispense water for a time period so I can water just before sunrise and late evening.

Next year I'm doing a garden. I just didn't get to it this year because I need to build raise beds first. We are in the rocky clay stuff of the foothills. So raised beds are a must. I do miss growing...peppers, bush beans, tomatoes, green onions, and strawberries. We also use to grow squash and cucumbers. Once in a while those little potatoes, the red and yellow ones.

Always used chicken manure a month or two before planting. Used the shade screen and cut holes in them for the plants. That kept the weeds down. Graveled between boxes. I hear from my neighbor that we need to also chicken wire under the boxes because of gofers.

Well the kids start back to school on Monday...so maybe I will have more computer time then:) I miss chatting with everyone.

Picked my first cucumber today. Was thinking about having a party because the season is now happening. Then I rechecked the size of the cucumber and realized it couldn't be a very big party. But it will make a good salad for me this evening.

I'm getting buried under the tomatoes everyone is bringing me. Love them...but everyone has more than enough. I'm ready for fall. This hot dry weather is dragging on to long here in central CA.

Nice cold cucumber...ahhhh. Just some salt and pepper and you have a feast:)

I think my garden is about done. For the next week the lows are supposed to be in the 40's. Also it's supposed to rain and drizzle most of the week. Won't take much to have some of that white stuff start dropping.

And here's my garden on 2 Sept. remember, all of these are growing in tubs.

Tomato

Cucumbers (tub is 18 inches tall. So you can see, that is a hug cucumber.)

Yellow Bell Peppers

Carrabean Red Jalapena's.

Cayenne peppers.

Here it is, the 10th of Sept. I think my mators are hating life right now. It's 31 degrees and there's white stuff falling. haha Nothing sticking, the ground is still too warm.

The fire in the fireplace feels pretty good though.

1 October. The garden is done. We had another freeze which makes 4 of them so far. But this week is supposed to be colder. They were even predicting the possiblity of snow.

So I picked what I could for canning and started putting it all away. I did leave 2 real hearty tomato plants, and 2 hearty pepper plants. I'm going to see how they stand up. Course, I'll cover them when it freezes, but still curious how long they'll last.

It'll give me a better idea for next year on when to cover and how long I can get away with that.

No, sorry. I have this guy named Jose that's working on my house. I checked my garden yesterday morning and I had a bunch of peppers. Then last night, I only had a few peppers. But Jose's pockets were bulging.

Okay, it is early May 2008 and here is how the garden is doing here in the California foothills. The last two pics are of the front yard. The grass is already turning brown in areas. The hillsides will be completely brown by June.

This is the first year I am doing container gardening. I usually did my gardens the old fashioned way but since we are renting now, thought it would be easier to do the container way. But there is a small raised bed out back that a person had fixed years ago and we are cleaning it out this year so we can use it next year. I was able to get part of it cleaned and some good top soil put in and planted some japanese eggplant and cucumbers and when the this storm stops I plan on planting a couple of bell pepper plants.

I have some lettuce and radishes in some smaller containers and they are up and growing. I have 10 tomato plants in containers and so far, they seem ok and doing well. Looking forward to some great fresh veggies this summer. Neighbor has some brocoli growing and lots of tomato plants.
