Default Your Favorite Landscape

Where in the U.S. is your favorite landscape? Do you prefer

Ocean

Rockies/Desert

Plains of the Midwest

Green Mountains of the east?

I'd like to be out west where there's fewer people, but the landscape seems harsh. As far as landscape I like to look out over the plains or the green mountains, but those places can be harsh in the winters...

For me, there's nothing more serene than looking out on the ocean. I guess that's the one I'd opt for. I'm more at home in the eastern mountains and love them dearly, but still the allure of the water seems stronger.

I don't know if you're a female but that seems like the standard response I get from them on that; Personally I'm not big on water,I could live in the landlocked midwest or even desert for all I care about water. I don't like when it gets too wet with storms & floods on the coast.

I love the rugged west coast- and the ever changing landscapes from semi desert/Mediterranean- as one moves north to evergreens in northern CA to the PNW.

But also the east coast- New England is wonderful- the changing soft light of the seasons gives so many colors, different lights- that are never harsh.

That's very poetic, but have you ever lived in New England? I'm sure they get some pretty harsh storms

Ocean or Bay for me! Whether it's the wild crashing of waves, or gentle splashing along the shore line, I love it!

Geesh Joe your having a hard time with this one

My vote goes to the Midwest, you know Indiana
The ocean is okay, but it does suck when Red Tide rolls in...ugh!
Farthest west I have been is Colorado, sorry didn't care much for the tumbleweeds rolling in the dirt...ugh!
Have not been to the Green Mountains, but I have been to the White Mountains in NH. Absoulutely beautiful!!! Awwe the drive on the Kangusmangus(SP?) Highway was spectacular. My husband's family is all from NH and Maine. I'm not sure if I ever would want to live there though

Not much for choices. I selected Desert/Rockies but I hate the desert.

Give me the Rockie and rough terrain any day. Snow capped mountains, the largest elk herds in the world, moose, bear, mountain lions, and deer and I'm a happy camper.

Fishing the high mountain lakes when it's 80 degrees out and the water is 32.2 is breath taking to say the least.

Going to a Rodeo in 100 degree heat during the day and then going home that evening to where there's still snow in the shady areas. That's living.

Wow...this one is all over the place. Favorite place is the ocean...although my next location is the mountains and pine trees.

Thanks for bringing it back online Izzy. That lets me start rattling:
What a country! There is almost one of everything somewhere around this country ... and I've pretty much seen it all many times - although I've been gone from 'The South' for decades. I love the Oceans - really I do ... power in the waves, isolation on the seas, fun on the beach and wonder in the lagoons. But I love the mountains - especially the ones where nobody goes ... where the trails lead away into the wind and erase the very thought of every corner you've turned in your life.
I liked the deserts too - like living on the moon - wrapped in the awesome silence of night or suffocated by the heavy wet blanket of air that ain't even supposed to be in a dry desert.
I used to think that pulling myself up the sides of those "green mountains of the east" - was mountain-climbing. One trip to the Rockies and I realized I was merely bramble-hopping. I did like the Smokies - all my family came from around there at some point in time no matter where they came from before.
The "Plains of the Midwest" are nice - I mean, even though one knows better, you can drive or walk those winding backroads where it doesn't look like "The Plains" and get the feeling that you're in unchartered lands ... It's all about where you feel right - where you find love - where you have a moment that changes your day ... or your life.
Sometimes, we call it home.
And here I am, in Texas. Jumpin' Jiminy ... are any of those 4 choices found in Texas? Oh ... yeah ... Ocean! (or, nearly so). Well, it's just nice to know that no matter where we are, we can take a moment against the backdrop of the sky ... maybe take a pull on the ol' pipe (I don't smoke it no mo') ... and just keep looking forward.

Depends on the climate. I prefer ocean tropical or sub-tropical. Who would want to live on the coast of Northern Canada or Siberia?

For me it was between the ocean and the Green Mountins of the east. Altitude was the final decision. I prefer low altitude :)

Joe, having spent 30 years all over the Rockies, I can mention a few things: Too much pressure on either the heart (for those with conditions) or on the lungs (for those with conditions). Too dry for the skin of many people. Too high a UV index for sensitive skin. Too cold for some tastes and also for people on certain medications ... and folks in the east get a liking for a multitude of trees and forests rather than the very common "sticks with leaves" strewn about the Rockies. Not to mention the many varieties of plants and vegetables NOT adaptable to the region.
I do miss the vistas though.

Thanks for the heads up I did not know all that! Last I heard was someone said that you just get used to the altitude. How high are we talking by the way?

None of the above. I like a lot of Trees, Lakes, and Rivers. Similar to where I currently live.

Yep many of those reasons apply, for me, very dry skin, i absolutely need humidity, (In fact my first years in New York were VERY difficult for me compared to Florida, because Florida is VERY humid, I was born in that humidity, raised in that humidity, and moved all over to places just as humid) Literally New York felt to me like a desert, like Arizona or something..no daily downpours and constant sumer rains, my body almost couldn't handle the dryness of new york)..(But it was better than the mountains of virginia where the altitude actually made me feel ill, as pretty as it was)..(somewhere, someone from arizona is now laughing at me :) ) ...Other problem is lungs (respiratory stuff, its a bit harder to breathe up there, and my body isnt used to it, Almost my entire life has been spent at or near sea level. The forest is more appealing to me than the Rockies, but in all honesty, I prefer the tropical forests, like seen in undeveloped Florida, or the Caribbean.

Wow I couldn't imagine that...although I think in recent years it's gotten about as hot as Florida in the summer here in PA! But I'm the opposite,I can barely stand any humidity!

Yea that's my main problem with the weather here...sometimes it feels like I'm gonna collapse! I'd rather have cold winters here, while it gets down to your bones it doesn't feel as stifling as summer.

I was camping over the weekend. Near Freeze Out Point up on Riley. 8800 ft. It was outstanding. Going up again next weekend. It got a bit chilly. 38 degrees, but no snow. Might get some next weekend cause we're going up above Walker Prairie.

On the flip side, Desi; I was raised in the East as well and lived all over there (and south) before heading out to be a California Hippy and then a Mountain-Freakin'-Cowboy in the Rockies ... but once took a Hi-Desert Native back to Ohio for over a year. She was absolutely freaked that she had "slimies" all over her skin and when she'd sweat, her hair turned to straw and when she didn't sweat it turned to wet spaghetti! One gets used to having dried-leather for skin and polyester-thread for hair in the Rockies. She was born there. Even in the pine-forests of Colorado and the twenty-foot deep snow of Montana ... it's dry, dry, dry. Of course - there's a plus side ... usually nary a flea anywhere nor roaches nor other bothersome insects 'cause the long, frozen winter keeps them from successfully hibernating and rehatching. And also, Desi ... there ain't hardly nuthin' cooler than keeping a pot of sheepherder's coffee going 24/7 on top of the woodstove and walking out the door to a view with no other house or human in it ... and watching the bullmoose herd walk over the hills toward you, flappers-first, looking like big ol' trees 'til their heads appear beneath them as they come closer. Just reading 53's post above this should bring nice pics to mind ... and it's even more soul-saving in person.
