Gourmet Dog Treats (Liver cookies)
1 lb. liver, pulverized in the food processor
3 eggs
3 tbs. canola oil
2 cups dry quick oats
Wheat flour (can use whole wheat or all purpose). Chicken livers are wetter than beef livers, and require more flour.
Line a flat, large baking pan with aluminum foil. Spray the aluminum foil with spray oil.
Beat the eggs, in a large bowl. Add the oil. Mix in the liver and add the oats. Mix well, until the oats are coated.
Add wheat flour, mixing in, then kneading, until you have a stiff dough. This is very messy!
Once the dough is stiff, spread it out into the baking pan. This is a lot like pizza dough...but lumpier and smellier!
Bake in a 350 degree oven, for 40 minutes. Allow to cool, partially. Cut into 1/2" X 1/2" squares (it's easier to cut it up, when the dough is still warm). Put the squares back into the pan, and leave it in the turned off oven, to dry them out. You want them to be hard.
Because the treats are loaded with liver, they are perishable (even though they are dry). I keep one bag in the fridge, and the rest in the freezer.
A Game to Play with Dog Treats
Tell your dog(s), in an excited voice, "Hide and Seek!" They will start to prance and wiggle. Put them into a down-stay, in one end of the house.
Take several dog treats, and hide them throughout the house. Release the dog(s). As they search for the treats, point to each treat and say, "Go over there!" This will train your dogs to go wherever you tell them to.
