Also, I keep reading posts that say that "Portland's economy sucks", but they don't elaborate. Can I get an explanation as to what this means specifically? High prices? Taxes? Unemployment?

Everybody's economy sucks. At least our housing market has not tanked as hard as other parts of the country. In fact, real estate keeps going up.
As for "what is cool", that all depends on what you find "cool".
