I'm a professional TV producer, currently producing an independent documentary short about people who are leaving NYC. If the following description fits you, or anyone you know, please get in touch! Shooting will be THIS WEEK (and possibly one day early next week), so please let me know asap.

Did you come to New York with a hope and a dream? Has that dream now been shattered? Perhaps the economic downturn has been a rude awakening. Or maybe you feel the city has changed in ways you didn't expect, and do not like. Either way, if the love is over, and you are planning on leaving (or just hoping to move elsewhere) now or in the foreseeable future, I'd love to talk to you!

If you are interested, please tell me a little bit about yourself (feel free to elaborate):

Where are you from?

Where do you hope/plan to go next? And when?

What do you do?

What were you expecting from NYC?

And what happened that made you decide to leave?

Again, shooting will be the week of June 29th (and possibly one day next week), so it's important to let me know asap if you are interested. The film is already set to screen in Brooklyn next month, and might also be picked up for TV, the web and/or festivals. Shooting should take up no more than an hour of your time.

I've heard on TV about this phenomenon, but I actually don't know anyone who is leaving in this time. Most people I know that have left are returning here because of the better economy compared to other states, as well as lower unemployment, diverse job market, and strong social safety net just in case. I routinely hear of people coming here from down south, especially from Florida. We were in that group, the group that headed south during the 80's recession, and the group that came back to New England's (and Mid Atlantic's) safety net now that outsourcing has brought this recession to the whole country.

I had thought about leaving before, possibly to California, but their crisis, and the recession kept me in New York. That is the story i hear most often. In fact I heard about it on public radio from a sociologists, that more than ever, people are staying here for security and quality of life. And to stay in America's safest city. (That was our main reason for coming, other cities became too dangerous and lack of jobs) I would never leave New York during a recesion, most people I know would NEVER do that, but it would be interesting nonetheless to see people who are.

Its hard here, but it seems like paradise compared to the rest of the country. Most states are cutting services. When they tried that here, the people took it to the streets for three months, the unions took out ads at every commercial break, EVEN against a Democratic Governor. Protest Groups got larger than 75,000 and even and one point completely blocked the Brooklyn Bridge According to the WCBS Traffic Report I remember seeing. So here instead we raised taxes, and so it seems like our unemployment is below average, one of the best of major cities, we are still the safest city in America. We can still afford full universal government healthcare, Homelessness is illegal (Constitutional Right to housing). No matter how wealthy I got, Id never leave knowing that if anything happened The people here would stick together and the safety net would hold me out, after years of paying taxes in.

I remember seeing a very wealthy woman who went totally broke based on the Bernie Madoff scandal. She wept on camera with her New York Benefits Card and siad "Thank God for this" Had she left elsewhere, (California) shed just be in a tent outside of sacramento being chased by police from site to site.

Sorry If I didnt answer your question in the way that you may have hoped. I am sure New York does not benefit everyone Future security doesn't matter to everyone But to me, The safety net is as important as health insurance (in the other states) or car insurance. Hopefully youll never need it, but you pay into it to protect you in times like this recession. Likeminded people here have kept me here in that regard.

Do please update though on the Documentary, because I am interested to hear both sides, especially if any other states are recession proof where people are going.

BEFORE the recession, there was a short term exodus to Pennsylvania, but that stopped a few years ago.

Seems to me, the people leaving New York, PA, and NJ are retired people, looking to take advantage of Delaware's low real estate taxes, no sales tax, and close proximity to Philly, Baltimore, and D.C. That's all well and good, but I wish Delaware had more to offer young people in the way of jobs and entertainment so our younger population would grow, thereby contributing to our state.

This also doesn't answer the OP's questions, but around me in Delaware, there are New York, PA, and NJ accents everywhere, and they keep coming.

The economic downturn in California has made that state for now a place to avoid.

Greater NY- NJ, and generally the mid Atlantic where last to go into recession- this includes New England as well.

The south Atlantic states= NC, SC GA and Florida have unemployment rates actually higher then the Northeast.

I see commercial real estate in the big Apple is hurting

The residential real estate market in NYC is also deteriorating further. While California is near a bottom- New York will recover later.
