The closest coastal town is Seaside which is about 80 miles from Portland and takes about 1.5 hours, depending on traffic.
from: portland, or to: seaside, or - Google Maps

Another popular coastal town is Lincoln City which is about 90-100 miles, depending on which way you take and takes about 2.5 hours, depending on traffic.
from: portland, or to: lincoln city, or - Google Maps

As for the rivers around Portland:

The Columbia River is the biggest and is popular for sailing, powerboating, wakeboarding, jet skis, water skiing, and kayaking.

The Willamette River is a slower moving and more polluted river that flows through the heart of downtown Portland. Many people love to fish, jetski, wakeboard, waterski, and kayak in it. There are also many dinner and sightseeing cruise boats that tour this river.

The Clackamas River is a river that flows from Mt. Hood down to the Willamette River. It is a popular river for fishing, tubing, rafting, and swimming during the summer.

Another popular River to fish, swim, and tube in during the summer is the Sandy River.

Along all of these rivers there are many parks with boat ramps and kayak and canoe launching areas.

Oh sure leave me looking like a lost little ditz

Bear in mind, I've only seen the highway signs pointing to Coc... er Rooster Rock while driving truck into Portland, so I was curious as if I was looking at it or not. I loved the scenery going through the Columbia River Gorge no matter what season it was at the time.

Hey, neat thanks for the pic. Used to always see the signs from the Interstate indicating the direction, never did see it though.

Let me re-phrase and try to hide my blonde for a moment. Wasn't actually sure that's what I was looking at, KWIM? If that makes no sense, just color me blonde

i am a little amused with the fact everybody from the PNW posts pics of back home only when it's sunny and blue skies, with the exception of rooster rock road signs, of course.
